Acts 8 verse 3

Acts 8 verse 3

As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.     (KJV)

And Saul ravaged the church, entering house by house, dragging both men and women, he delivered them to prison.         (IB)

------------------------------------

Retranslation:  Conservatism makes havoc of the church. It stifles the urge to respond to “church,”-----God’s call to each individual to Come! Dine with ME! It leaps upon and crushes the individual’s desire to respond to God’s call, and would drag them back into the land of Confinement.

-----------------------------------------

SaulThe belief that the “letter” is divine, rather than merely a symbol of the divine, precluding the need of direct communion, or Holy Ghost. Conservatism, the religious belief that God, Spirit, is known through matter-based traditions and uninspired interpretations of inspired writings.

church =  A command: Come! Come to ME! Assemble! Be-Come-One! Be With ME! Commune! Experience! Understand!  To be “called out” by God.

made havoc =  To soil, make filthy, insult. To despise, sneer at, to call shameful and disgraceful, even illegal. To triumph over the “church” with insolence and contempt. Pride hating the prospect of being “called out” by its Destroyer.

-----------------------------------

Saul 4569 Saulos of Hebrew origin [H7586]

H7586 saul, passive participle of H7592; asked; Shaul, the name of an Edomite and two Israelites:-----Saul, Shaul.

H7592 saal or sael, a primitive root; to inquire; by implication to request; by extension to demand:-----ask, ask counsel, ask on, beg, borrow, lay to charge, consult, demand, desire, earnestly, enquire, greet, obtain, leave, lend, pray, request, salute, straitly, surely, wish.

ask (Origins Dict.): Middle-English asken, axien: Old-English ascian, acsian, akin to Old Frisian askia, Old Saxon excon, Old High German eiscon, Old Norse oeskia; to Old Slavic iskati (stem -isk-), to seek (compare Lithuanian ieskoti); to Sanskrit icchati, he seeks: IndoEuropean root, *isk-, var *eisk, *esk-.

ask (1828 Dict. def.): to seek to obtain by words; to petition; to request; with of before the person to whom the request is made.  Ask counsel of God. Judges xviii.

ravaged 3075 lymainomai, middle from a probable derivative of 3089 (meaning filth); properly to soil, i.e. (figuratively) insult (maltreat):-----make havoc of.

soil (filthy)  = conservatism.   “We soil our garments with conservatism, and afterwards we must wash them clean.”  (Emphasis added.) SH p. 452:20.

conservatism (Modern Webster’s) n. (1835)
  1. The principles and policies of a Conservative party; the Conservative party.
  2. Disposition in politics to preserve what is established.
  3. A political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions, and preferring gradual development to abrupt change.
  4. The tendency to prefer an existing or traditional situation to change.

insult (Origins Dict.): [L. insulare, to leap in or upon, to attack.]
1.To treat with gross abuse, insolence or contempt, by words or actions; as, to call a man a coward or a liar, or to sneer at him, is to insult him.
  1. To insult over, to triumph over with insolence and contempt.

insolence (ibid.): [ Fr. from L. insolentia; in and soleo, to be accustomed.]
Pride or haughtiness manifested in contemptuous and overbearing treatment of others; petulant contempt; impudence.

contempt (ibid.): [L. contemno; con and temno, to despise.]
  1. The act of despising; the act of viewing or considering and treating as mean, vile and worthless; disdain; hatred of what is mean or deemed vile. This word is one of the strongest expressions of a mean opinion which the language affords.  “Nothing can be great, the contempt of which is great.”   Addison
  2. The state of being despised; when in a scriptural sense, shame, disgrace.  “Some shall wake up to everlasting contempt.”    Dan. xii.
  3. In law, disobedience of the rules and orders of a court, which is a punishable offense.

church 1577  ekklesia, from a compound of 1537 and a derivative of 2564; a calling out, i.e. (concretely) a popular meeting, especially a religious congregation (Jewish synagogue, or Christian community of members on earth or saints in heaven or both):-----assembly, church.

2564 kaleo, akin to the base of 2753; to “call” (properly aloud, but used in a variety of applications, directly or otherwise):----bid, call (forth), (whose) name (was [called]), (whose) surname (was [called]).

2753 keleuo, from a primary kello (to urge on); “hail”; to incite by word, i.e. order:----bid, (at, give) command, commandment.

Acts 7 verse 60

Acts 7 verse 60

And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.     (KJV)

And placing the knees, he cried out with a loud voice, Lord, do not make this sin stand to them. And saying this, he fell asleep.          (IB)

-----------------------------------------

Retranslation:  Humbling himself, he blessed his attackers, saying, God, don’t let them continue in this mistake (resisting the Holy Spirit), and fail to realize their true portion!

------------------------------------------

NOTE:  Stephen is becoming a Christian: one who loves. In the 2013 September Christian Science Journal, page 51, “How a Christian is known,” the author quotes Jesus, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another,” and writes:

“You and I will be known as followers of Christ Jesus by one very specific piece of evidence-----our love for one another.”

Stephen was chosen to “help the widows,” those who stood on the other side of the impassable gulf (see Acts 6 verse 1). These “widows” are the ones Stephen is addressing.  Stephen is trying to wake them up.  He is trying to show them that the Holy Spirit is not attained by being in the Tabernacle, but by being the Tabernacle. Being the vessel into which the Promise (I AM with you) is poured.

placing 5087 tithemi, a prolonged form of a primary theo (which is used only as an alternate in certain tenses); to place (in the widest applications, literally or figuratively; properly in a passive or horizontal posture, and thus different from 2476, which properly denotes an upright and active position, while 2749 is properly reflexive and utterly prostrate):-----advise, appoint, bow, commit, conceive, give, kneel down, lay (aside, down, up), make, ordain, purpose, put, set (forth), settle, sink down.

passive (Origins Dict.): See PATIENCE, para. 5. Of the pat- and -pat words, the base is L. pati, to suffer, to endure, to be patient.

passive (1828 Dict. def.):
  1. Suffering; not acting, receiving or capable of receiving impressions from external agents. We were passive spectators, not actors in the scene.
The mind is wholly passive in the reception of all its simple ideas.  Locke.
God is not in any respect passive.   Bradwardine.
  1. Unresisting; not opposing; receiving or suffering without resistance; as passive obedience; passive submission to the law.
  2. Passive verb, in grammar, is a verb which expresses passion, or the effect of an action of some agent; as in L. doceor, I am taught; in English, she is loved and admired by her friends; he is assailed by slander.
  3. Passive obedience, as used by writers on government, denotes not only quiet unresisting submission to power, but implies the denial of the right of resistance, or the recognition of the duty to submit in all cases to the existing government.
  4. Passive prayer, among mystic divines, is a suspension of the activity of the soul or intellectual faculties, the soul remaining quiet and yielding only to the impulses of grace.
knees 1119 gony, of uncertain affinity; the “knee”:-----knee, kneel.

NOTE on “knees” and “blessings”:
If you have an 1828 facsimile dictionary, you should check out the “Introduction.” I am going to give you a taste of it. It’s all about word origins. The pages are not numbered, but I numbered mine, and on page “12,” Webster treats these words below. I cannot reproduce the language fonts on my computer, but they are printed in the 1828 dictionary.
It’s very helpful making connections like these in understanding the words of the Bible. Thus, we see below the connection between knees and blessing. If, symbolically, bending the knee denotes humility (putting your “self” in a position of voluntary inactivity, a type of “self” sacrifice!), we can then see a connection between becoming humble and being blessed.

Hebrew:
  1. To bless; to salute, or wish a blessing to,
  2. To couch, or bend the knee, to kneel.
Deriv. A blessing, and the knee.
Chaldee:
  1. To bless; to salute at a meeting, and to bid farewell at parting.
  2. To bend the knee.
  3. To dig; to plow; to set slips of a vine or plant for propagation.
Deriv. The knee; a blessing; a cursing [blessing and cursing are same word. This word means a “loud sound”]; a cion; the young of fowls.
Syriac:
  1. To fall on the knees; to fall or bow down. Judg. v. 27.
  2. To issue or proceed from. Math. xv. 19.
  3. To bless.
Samaritan:
  1. To bless.
Ethiopic:
  1. To bless. Deriv. the knee.
Arabic:
  1. To bend the knee; to fall on the breast, as a camel.
  2. To be firm or fixed.
  3. To rain violently; to pour forth rain, as the clouds.
  4. To detract from; to traduce; to reproach or pursue with reproaches; to revile.
  5. To bless; to pray for a blessing on; to prosper; to be blessed.
  6. To hasten; to rush, as on an enemy; to assail.
Deriv. The breast; the bason of a fountain; a fish pond, or receptacle of water, as in Heb. and Ch.: also increase; abundance; constancy; splendor; a flash of light.
Webster goes on to discuss the radical sense of blessing and cursing, to send or pour forth loud words; the radical sense of kneeling, to throw, to bend,”   etc., etc.

voice 5456 phone, probably akin to 5316 through the idea of disclosure; a tone (articulate, bestial or artificial); by implication an address (for any purpose), saying or language:-----noise, sound, voice.

5316 phaino, prolonged for the base of 5457; to lighten (shine), i.e. show (transitive or intransitive, literally or figuratively): appear, seem, be seen, shine, think.

Acts 7 verse 51

Acts 7 verse 51

Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.    (KJV)

Stiffnecked and uncircumcised in the heart and in the ears, you always fell against the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so you also did.    (IB)
------------------------------------

Retranslation:  You who are parched! You resist the baptism of repentance (water)! You whose ears hear no thunder! Your minds are uninspired! Regularly you follow your rules and established modes, but these you use instead of the furniture in the Tabernacle! Just like your fathers. There is no communion without sacrifice!

-------------------------------------

stiffnecked 4644 sklerotrachelos, from 4642 and 5137; having a hard nape, i.e. (figuratively) obstinate:----stiffnecked.

4642 skleros, from the base of 4628; dry, i.e. hard or tough (figuratively harsh, severe):----fierce, hard.

4012 peri, from the base of 4008; properly through (all over), i.e. around; figuratively with respect to; used in various applications, of pace, cause or time (with genitive denoting the subject or occasion or superlative point; with the accusative the locality, circuit, matter, circumstance or general period). In compounds it retains substantially the same meaning of circuit (around), excess (beyond), or completeness (through):-----about, thereabout, above, against, at, on behalf of, and his company, which concern, (as) concerning, for, how it will go with, of, thereof, whereof, on, over, pertaining (to), for sake, state, estate, (as) touching, by, whereby (in), with.

you 5210

always 104 aei, from an obsolete primary noun (apparently meaning continued duration); “ever,” by qualification regularly; by implication earnestly:-----always, ever.

regularly (1828 Dict. def.): [L. regularis, from regula, a rule.]
  1. In a manner according to a rule or established mode; as a physician or lawyer regularly admitted to practice; a verse regularly formed.
  2. In uniform order; at certain intervals or periods; as day and night regularly returning.

4098 pipto, a reduplicated and contracted form of peto (which occurs only as an alternate in certain tenses); probably akin to 4072 through the idea of alighting; to fall (lit. or fig):-----fail, fall (down), light on.

4072 petomai, or prolonged petaomai or contracted ptaomai, middle of a primary verb; to fly:-----fly, flying.

alight (Origins Dict.): adjective: either a-, on + light, fire, or the past participle of Middle-English alihten, to set aflame, Old English alihtan (a, on + lihtan, lyhtan, to shine: cf LIGHT, v.).

H2283 haga, from an unused root meaning to revolve [compare H2287]; properly vertigo, i.e. (figuratively) fear:----terror.

H2328 hug, a primitive root [compare 2287]; to describe a circle:----circle, circuit, compass.

NOTE on “circle”:  I have wondered if this reference to a circle, marching in a circle, circuit, has to do with reasoning. In logic, one goes from premises, e.g. God is All, God is good, to conclusion, therefore, all is well. It’s a type of circle.
On the other hand, “giddy” comes from the same root as the word “God”. Gid is a disease affecting sheep, a notable symptom being the animal’s tendency to run about in circles until it falls. Giddy, silly, mad, derives from Old English gydig, mad: literally possessed by a god. Compare, semantically, enthusiastic, divine possession or inspiration, to be god-inspired, from entheos, en, in + theos, a god.

Acts 7 verse 44

Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.   (KJV)

The tabernacle of the testimony was among our fathers in the wilderness, as He who spoke to Moses commanded to make it according to the pattern which he had seen.
(IB)
----------------------------------

Retranslation:  Our fathers had the Tent of Meeting, symbolizing the seeker’s lonely experience in the wilderness of errors regarding the nature of God and doubts about the existence of God. God commanded Moses that he should make this symbolic structure according to the model which he had experienced in seeking and finding communion.

----------------------------------

GOD “FURNISHES” EVIDENCE OF THE EXISTENCE OF GOD!

NOTE: I was immediately attracted to the word furniture (root meaning of the word tabernacle, see below) because of my previous study of the Tabernacle in the book of Revelation. The Tabernacle, also known as the “Tent of Meeting,” contains objects called "furniture" which are really symbols of the steps to spiritual communion. Here they are, in the order they are experienced: (the following is taken from Studies in the Apocalypse of John of Patmos by Edith Armstrong Hoyt, pp.11-13)

Door = the desire to enter into communion with God, into the Presence.

Brazen alter = willingness to give up (sacrifice) the most valuable material possessions, to go forward into communion. Jesus was associated with this step and called “The Lamb of God” because he was willing to give up his most valuable human possession, human life, to go forward into his communion, his proof by resurrection and ascension, of eternal life itself.

Laver = purification of thought after the sacrifice.

Step four requires entrance into the “inner Tabernacle” which has two rooms, the Holy Place, and the Holy of Holies. The Holy Place has three pieces of furniture:

Seven-branched golden lampstand (candlestick) =  ever-presence of spiritual illumination.

Twelve tablets of unleavened bread (shew bread) = ever-presence of spiritual sustainment in the recognition of God’s allness.  Jesus called himself the “light of the world” and the “bread of life,” using symbols of the fourth and fifth steps.

Altar of incense = continuing to stand in the sustaining presence of spiritual light, the seeker experiences gratitude and appreciation for God’s allness.

Beyond the curtains or veil, in back of the altar of incense, is the Holy of Holies, with one piece of furniture:

Ark of the Covenant = Communion!  It contains the Decalogue, Aaron’s rod and manna. The cherubim and seraphim = wisdom and understanding.

--------------------------------------

tabernacle 4633 skene, apparently akin to 4632 and 4639; a tent or cloth hut (lit. of fig.):------habitation, tabernacle.

4632 skeuos, of uncertain affinity; a vessel, implement, equipment or apparatus (lit. or fig.) [specifically a wife as contributing to the usefulness of the husband]):-----goods, vessel, sail, stuff.

4639 skia, apparently a primary word; “shade” or shadow (lit. or fig. [darkness of error or an adumbration]):----shadow.

vessel (Origins Dict. p. ): (See Vase, para. 3) L. vas, a recipient, more tall than wide, for liquids. L. vas has a diminutive vascellum, with plural vascella, yielding Old-French vessele, with variation vessel adopted by Middle-English; the sense ‘ship’ derives from the fact that an empty vase made of light material will float,----a sense that arose in French as early as the 12th century.

vessel (1828 Dict. def.):
  1. A cask or utensil proper for holding liquors and other things, as a tun, a pipe, a puncheon, a hogshead, a barrel, a firkin, a bottle, a kettle, a cup, a dish, etc.
  2. Something containing.
Vessels of wrath, in Scripture, are such persons as are to receive the full effects of God’s wrath and indignation, as a punishment for their sins.
Vessels of mercy, are person who are to receive the effects of God’s mercy, or future happiness and glory.
Chosen vessels, ministers of the gospel, as appointed to bear the glad news of salvation to others; called also earthen vessels, on account of their weakness and frailty.

implement (Origins Dict. p. ): (See Plenary, para. 14) The L. root is ple-, as in the simple plere, to fill; Gr. pletho, I am full. L. implere, to fill up (im- vaguely intensive), to fulfil, has derivative implementum, a filling up, whence E. implement.
implement (1828 Dict. def.): Whatever may supply wants; particularly, as now used, tools, utensils, vessels, instruments; the tools or instruments of labor; the vessels used in a kitchen, etc.; as the implements of trade or husbandry. [It is a word of very extensive signification.]

equipment (Origins Dict. p. ): (See Ship, para. 4) From the Late German form of Old High German scif, a ship, comes Old French-Middle French esquiper  (English-French equiper), to fit out, originally a ship, later a body of men, finally an individual: when E. ‘to equip.’ Derivative late Middle-French equipage and E-F equipement becomes E. equipage, equipment.

equipment (1828 Dict. def.):
  1. The act of equipping, or fitting for a voyage or expedition.
  2. Any thing that is used in equipping; furniture; habiliments; warlike apparatus; necessaries for an expedition, or for a voyage; as the equipments of a ship or an army.
apparatus (Origins Dict. p. ): Adopted from L. past participle of apparare (apparatus), to prepare: as- for ad, to + parare, to make ready, stem par-, apparently akin to parere (stem par-), to bring forth (a child): the semantic link is clear and strong. Compare “apparel”.

apparatus (1828 Dict. def.):
1. Things provided as means to some end; as the tools of an artisan; the furniture of a house; instruments of war. In more technical language, a complete of instruments or utensils, for performing any operations.

witness 3142 martyrion, neuter of a presumed derivative of 3144; something evidential, i.e. (generally) evidence given or (specifically) the Decalogue (in the sacred Tabernacle):----to be testified, testimony, witness.

evidential (ibid.): affording evidence; clearly proving.
evidence (ibid.): That which elucidates and enables the mind to see truth; proof arising from our own perceptions by the senses, or from the testimony of others, or from inductions of reason. Our senses furnish evidence of the existence of matter, of solidity, of color, of heat and cold, of a difference in the qualities of bodies, of figure, etc. The declarations of a witness furnish evidence of facts to a court and jury; and reasoning, or the deductions of the mind from facts or arguments, furnish evidence of truth or falsehood.

3144 martys, of uncertain affinity; a witness (literal [judicial] or figurative [generally]); by analogy a “martyr”:-----martyr, record, witness.
