Acts 18 verses 24 - 28
(Interlinear Bible Translation)

24   But a certain Jew named Apollos, an Alexandrian by birth, an eloquent man, came to Ephesus, being powerful in the Scriptures.

25   This one was taught by mouth in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things about the Lord, having understood only the baptism of John.

26   And this one began to speak boldly in the synagogue. And hearing him Priscilla and Aquila took him and more accurately expounded the way of God to him.

27   And he having intended to go through into Achaia, having been encouraged the brothers wrote to the disciples to welcome him; who, having arrived much helped those who were believing through grace.

28   For he powerfully confuted the Jews publicly, proving through the Scriptures Jesus to be the Christ.

Retranslation (24):  This one whose name means ‘Satan’, the Destroyer, and who comes from a place meaning ‘man-defender’ by birth, is an orator or public speaker, and he comes to Ephesus, and speaks intelligently about the Scriptures. 

Retranslation (25):  This one was apprised of God’s mode and means through instruction in the rudiments and principles of God: God’s self-Existent manner of being, the divinely fair form, the infinite model, the permanent bent of Mind towards its beloved idea; . . .

. . . and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things about the Lord, having understood merely through the “baptism [“baptizo”] of John”. In other words, he had only technical or figurative knowledge about God,----he was still a cucumber! He was in the letter only, not yet having been immersed in the Spirit to become a pickle, dyed or stained forever, no going back to cucumberhood.

Retranslation (26):   And this one began to speak boldly in the synagogue. And hearing him Priscilla and Aquila took him and more accurately and perfectly declared God’s modes and means to him, casting out error and declaring more exact truths.

Retranslation (27):   And he having intended to go through into Achaia, having been encouraged the brothers wrote to the disciples to welcome him; who, having arrived much helped those who were believing through the divine influence on the heart (grace).  NOTE: Apollos, who is well-educated in the letter, is able to help those who experience God without book-learning or formal instruction.

Retranslation (28):  Openly and publicly, showing through the Scriptures, he cogently convinced the Jews, that Jesus is the Messiah.
  
NOTE:  How would Apollos have proved Jesus was the Christ through the Scriptures (Torah)?

1. He was the son of a virgin;

2. He was anointed ----- through the baptism of John; completely immersed in the Spirit; a dove, the symbol of peace, descends upon him; he is consecrated to God’s mission; he is furnished with the spirit of God without measure, fully employed in doing good;

3. He did the works of God.

18   And having remained many days more, having taken leave of the brothers, Paul sailed to Syria-----and Priscilla and Aquila were with him-----having shaved his head in Cenchrea, for he had a vow.

19   And he came to Ephesus, and he left those there. But he going into the synagogue, he reasoned with the Jews.

20   And they asking him to remain over a longer time with them, he did not agree;

21   But took leave of them, saying, I must by all means keep the coming feast at Jerusalem; but I will come again to you, God willing. And he sailed from Ephesus.

22   And landing at Caesarea, having gone up and greeted the church, he went down to Antioch.

23   And spending some time, he went out, in order passing through the Galatian and Phrygian country, making all the disciples strong.

13   saying, This fellow persuadeth men to worship God contrary to the law.

14   And when Paul was now about to open his mouth, Gallio said unto the Jews, If it were a matter or wrong or wicked lewdness, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you:

15   But if it be a question of words and names, and of your law, look ye to it; for I will be no judge of such matters.

16   And he drave them from the judgment seat.

17   Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things.

5   And when both Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul was pressed by the Spirit, earnestly testifying to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ.

6   But they having resisted, and blaspheming, having shaken his garments, he said to them, Your blood be on you head. I am pure from it; from now on I will go to the Gentiles.

7   And moving from there, he went into the house of one name Justus, one worshipping God, whose house was next door to the synagogue.

8   And Crispus, the synagogue ruler, believed the Lord along with all his household. And hearing, many of the Corinthians believed and were baptized.

9   And the Lord said to Paul through a vision in the night, Do not fear, but speak, and do not keep silence; 

10   because I am with you, and no one shall set on you to oppress you; because there is much people to Me in this city.

11   And he remained a year and six months teaching the word of God among them.

Retranslation (5): . . .  Paul, the one who is shown the light, and, therefore, no longer believes that he lives in matter, is pressed by the Spirit.

What does it mean to be “pressed” by the Spirit? To be held together; to be arrested, like a prisoner; to be compelled.

Paul is a prisoner of God, his Beloved One, in the sense that he is completely helpless to do ought but God’s asking,----he is held together in such harmony with God, such love, that he is completely compelled by this love. Paul has no will to do otherwise. Here, in this harmony called God, there is no other will.

With all sincerity, Paul tells the Jews that Jesus, or the Self-Existent, Saving Principle is the Messiah, the Savior, the Christ, the anointed one.

NOTE on verse 8 and the meaning of the Greek word “believe” or pisteuo:  

In verse 8, we read that Crispus and many of the Corinthians “believed” and were baptized.  Believe or pisteuo means to have faith in. Faith, according to Webster, primitively signified a rope or cable that bound or made fast

What is it that “binds” us to God? Isn’t it God Itself?  God’s great love for us; Her power; Her unutterable tenderness?  Her all-knowingness. Are these attributes the things that bind us together with God?  That make us believe? 

Are these attributes the Christ? Is the Christ what God shares with us? The meaning of Christ in Greek is the anointed, the thing which is in contact, the thing which is loaned, the thing which furnishes what is needed.  Mind can loan everything it has and not be reduced one iota. It can furnish mind! life! truth! love! soul! spirit! principle!  It can furnish all that is necessary to everything that It creates, and still . . . still . . . It cannot be diminished. 

I can see into Its height, . . . Its depth, . . . Its power, . . . Its satisfaction and this does not diminish the experience of It for another; on the contrary, It is magnified to all when people pray Its praise!

Think about Paul and Silas “singing God’s praise” in prison. Think about those prisoners ‘listening intently’.  Wouldn’t they have caught the joy of praising God, the great Good, the all-loving Creator?  While they were magnifying God, an ‘earthquake change’ touched the whole town!

What is the Christ?  Was Paul telling them about a man who could heal disease and raise the dead? Or was he telling them about a form of consciousness that could clothe each individual in his audience?  A form of divine consciousness, loaned by God, furnished to each precious idea?  A consciousness that covered one like a garment, giving one a sense of being new-born into Spirit, into the kingdom of heaven, into the All of God? Giving one power hear divine communications, and the willingness,--- born-of-love-for-God,----- to do good, to do God’s will, to do . . . God’s . . .  work?

What binds us to God? What gives us faith? I believe when we catch a whiff of the love God experiences as God,---- for Itself, and for us, Its precious reflection of Itself, inseparable from Itself, a part of Itself,--- we will give God credit for being God, i.e. we will feel that love, we will feel that power, we will feel that tenderness, and we will spiritually understand that we are a part of It, that It is all that has ever been, and all that can ever be. The strength and power of spiritually understanding something, I believe, is the rope and cable of faith that binds us to the Source of that strength, the Mind that causes all things to be.
