Acts 10 verses 1 - 2


Acts 10 verse 1 -2  

(1)   There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,

(2)   A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people and prayed to God alway.       (KJV)

(1)   But a certain man named Cornelius was in Caesarea, a centurion of a cohort being called Italian;

(2)   one devout and fearing God, with all his household, both doing many alms to the people and praying continually to God.           (IB)

Retranslation (verse 1 only):  Cornelius, a Roman, living in the City of Caesar, is a Roman officer, a captain, in charge of 100 Roman soldiers. 

Retranslation (verse 2 only):  His whole consciousness is in union with the Supreme Divinity, and, experiencing awe and reverence, he binds himself to God continually through prayer; and exercises Loves’ tender mercy toward many people who are neither his countrymen nor family.

NOTE on similarities between the eunuch and CorneliusBoth are non-Jews who know God. The eunuch reads about God; Cornelius seems to “know” God naturally. Neither knows about Jesus. The Apostles (aspects of God) shine on these scenes. Philip, who represents STRONG FRIENDSHIP, befriends the eunuch and tells him about Jesus. Philip learns that to obey God brings one opportunities to do good. Philip also learns that rich men are loved by God and perhaps CAN enter the kingdom of heaven. What will Peter do?  Will Peter change the captain? or will the captain change Peter? Will change come to both? Let’s read on!

NOTE on unfolding story: If Peter comes to Cornelius’ rescue, Peter will be humbled by the experience somehow. Peter represents REVELATION. Cornelius is prepared, since he is already in “awe” of God, meaning he has seen God’s light before. What will happen?  Can’t wait to find out!  Onward! To verse 3.

Father’s compassion = run (hasten towards) + embrace (fell on neck) = LIGHT!
