Acts 10 verses 5 - 6

(5)   And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:

(6)   He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.      (KJV)

Retranslation (for verse 5 only):  Now! Send your old-Adam-man to this bright and beautiful place, and summon listening which invites hearing, which invokes revelation


Retranslation (verse 6 only):  Revelation is entertained by one who hears Me, and has been exposed to My light, and whose consciousness is filled with My good judgement. It will tell you what you must, of necessity, yield to be bound up with Me.

NOTE on “man”:  In the Hebrew language, adam (H120) is the word ruddy (to show blood in the face), i.e. a human being of a common sort, a low or mean man or a man of low degree. The Greek aner (G435) is somewhat equivalent.  The word anthropos (G444) combines aner with optomai (G3700). This word optomai is the word for face, but it is also the word for before, as in the presence of. Both aner and anthropos can be translated into the English word man.

NOTE on the meaning of Peter’s name:  “Thou art the Christ, the son of the living God,” Peter states (Matt 16:16), and Jesus gives meaning to his name: “for flesh and blood did not reveal this unto you, but my Father which is in heaven.”  It was upon this “rock” of revelation, i.e. direct communion with the Holy Spirit, that Jesus said his “church” would be built upon. 
             Remember, church, ekklesia, means “calling out, a meeting, an assembly” by, with, and for God. Church is the structure of God, Her divine creation, Her divine movement, Her divine communing with Her own divine ideas. Revelation is unfoldment by and of God.

NOTE on “tanning”:  I like this idea of an oak infusion making things firm, durable and impervious. The oak is a metaphor for God. The Hebrew word Jehovah can trace its origin to ayil H352, meaning strength; hence anything strong; specifically an oak or other strong tree. On page 128 of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, we read: “The human mind, imbued with this spiritual understanding, becomes more elastic, is capable of greater endurance, . . .” (Emphasis added.)   

But what is really interesting,-----especially in the light of the story of Philip and the eunuch in chapter 8,-----is its meaning to imbrown. The eunuch comes from Ethiopia. In Greek, Ethiopia is Aithiops, or scorched face (aitho, to scorch + ops, the face)!  Both the eunuch and Peter have been exposed to divine light: they are “tanned” by exposure to the rays of the sun, a metaphor for divine Light!  (See this blog, Acts 8 verses 27 and 28, regarding the spiritual elevation of the eunuch.)

NOTE on “salt”: Jesus says: “You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?” (See Matt 5:13; Mark 9:50; Luke 14:34.) According to the Greek dictionary, the word moraino (lose savour), means to become insipid; figuratively to act as a simpleton. So, the opposite of insipid is salty. Insipid means lacking good taste or judgment. If you are “salty” you have good judgment!
